Cross Border Healthcare

E-mail Print

The Directive on Cross Boarder Healthcare has been approved on 19th January 2011. During a statement on this issue John Dalli said that this "vote marks an important step forward for all patients in Europe."  He added that this directive helps to clarify the right to access safe and good quality treatment to people across the European Union. The aim of cross boarder health care is to allow for patient mobility as well as a high level of health protection. This will be done by facilitating access to safe and high quality cross boarder health care. The basket of healthcare to which citizens are entitled and the mechanisms used to finance and deliver that healthcare will be taken under the national context. The full text can be found here.

A question and answer document on the Directive which clarifies the benefits has been developed in all EU languages.

The Directive should be implemented by the EU countries within the next 30 months after its approval.
